Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.

Video review systems will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the right to contest particular rulings from the chair umpire, mirroring the system already in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a season following the AELTC rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled the player was guilty of interference, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where fans have occasionally been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
