WHO Faces Significant Workforce Reduction After US Funding Withdrawal

This international public health organization has announced plans to reduce its staff by nearly a quarter – amounting to over 2,000 jobs – before mid-2026.

Funding Shortfall Prompts Substantial Restructuring

The decision follows following the United States, formerly the organization's biggest donor, withdrew funding previously this period.

Washington had been contributing about eighteen percent of the organization's overall funding, creating a significant budgetary gap.

Expected Staff Reductions

According to internal projections, the staff will decrease from nine thousand four hundred and one posts in January 2025 to around seven thousand and thirty by June 2026.

This decrease of 2,371 positions comprises staff reductions, employees retiring, and natural attrition.

"This year was among the most difficult in WHO's existence, while we undertook a painful but essential process of prioritization and realignment," commented the agency's leader.

Budget Gap Remains

The Switzerland-headquartered organization currently confronts a budget shortfall of $1.06bn for the upcoming biennium, amounting to almost a fourth of its total budget.

This amount represents an improvement from a prior projected shortfall of $1.7bn noted in May.

Excluded Funding

The financial calculations exclude an additional 1.1 billion dollars in expected contributions from current negotiations with multiple donors.

A spokesperson for the organization noted that the present unsecured part of the budget is in fact lower than in previous years, attributing this to multiple factors:

  • A smaller overall budget size
  • Initiation of a new fundraising campaign
  • Higher in member states' required fees

The realignment process is now approaching its end, allowing the organization to progress with a reshaped structure.
