England Golf Calls for Treasury Backing for 2030 Solheim Cup Bid

The most recent European vs US women's golf contest taking place in Europe was in Spain in 2023, while the upcoming tournament set for the Netherlands four years from now.

After the latest Ryder Cup triumph, the national golf association is calling on the government to underwrite its bid to organize the Solheim Cup in the country for the very first occasion.

This renowned competition pitting the top female golfers from Europe and America has been held on two occasions in Scotland and in Wales yet never in England. An official proposal has been prepared to hold it at The Grove within Hertfordshire in 2030.

But planners require thirty million pounds to back the bid and at present only £10m has been secured. England Golf is requesting Treasury support to cover the funding gap.

Negotiations to acquire government support began in early spring but a decision on whether support will be provided is urgently needed. The hosting rights for the 2030 tournament are owned by IMG who demand a resolution within the current month.

Per the bid document, England Golf maintains that winning the hosting rights "offers significant benefits to the nation".

He expanded: "That's certainly what we expect will occur with the Solheim Cup, from the expenditure that would happen throughout the tournament or the job creation."

To organize the men's tournament on European soil needs more than £400m while for the Solheim Cup the requirement is about £30m.

"We are seeking circa £20m through Treasury support to guarantee it," the executive declared.

"This amount supplementing already a significant investment from both venue and England Golf and potentially other partners we intend to put money in."

Time Sensitivity

The spokesperson would not state that discussions have reached an impasse, but acknowledged: "Certainly there exists a quandary at the moment with regards to if the Treasury can fund premier competitions."

"Previous examples demonstrate, whether it be major athletic events, whether it be women's sports events, that they are ready to put their hands in their pocket for certain events."

"I think should we receive a positive answer within the next month, it would enable us to secure the Solheim Cup to be staged in England."

He finished: "I don't have the funding at present; the bid cannot proceed. This could alter soon with the thumbs up, yet the deadline remains time-sensitive."

"Support for hosting attempts will be based on a range of criteria including how far they produce social and economic benefits for the UK."
